The Phoenicians in Sicily: Mothya and Marsala

Island of Mothya and Archaeological Museum

Phoenician people coming from the Eastern Mediterranean sea founded three main cities in Sicily: Mothya, Panormos and Solunto. Among them, the island of Mothya definitively is the most fascinating site for its amazing location inside the natural lagoon named Stagnone.

Phoenician people coming from the Eastern Mediterranean sea founded three main cities in Sicily: Mothya, Panormos and Solunto. Among them, the island of Mothya definitively is the most fascinating site for its amazing location inside the natural lagoon named Stagnone. Moreover, it stands in front of the wonderful salt pains with their typical and still working mills. In the Whitaker Foundation Museum visitors can admire the famous marble statue called Youth of Mothya and other interesting objects found on the Island, such as the Phoenicians masks and the stele from the Tophet. We will explore the whole island along the coast, visiting the Kothon basin and the Tophet necropolis, inspiring the sweet smell of the Mediterranean vegetation. The tour lasts 3 hours. After lunch, we will transfer to the Baglio Anselmi Museum of Marsala, that displays a surprising and well preserved example of Punic warship and other underwater findings from the sea around Mothya and Marsala. The tour lasts 2 hours.
