Trekking to the castle of Pietratagliata
Hiking (by foot or by donkey) to the ancient forgotten fortresses.
It is a scenic path of great historical interest, where it is possible to admire the remains of ancient medieval fortresses set into the rocks.
Starting from the AgriCasaVacanze Cafeci holiday homes, we will climb the ancient Bourbon road that skirts the Crovacchio Fortress, then head to the summit of Mount Rossomanno. Once at the top we will visit the Castellaccio Uberti Castle, and the abandoned hermitage of Cunvintazzu. Then we will descend through the forests on the south-east side of the mountain toward the SP35b road, walking towards the river Gresti (now little more than a stream). We then head south to reach the Medieval fort of Pietratagliata (also called Gresti) which concludes the trek. From the cliff top where the castle is set there are breathtaking views over the countryside of Enna, all the way to the sea on clear days; from here it is not uncommon to spot many species of birds such as hawks, buzzards, crows, pigeons, jackdaws and also sometimes the rare Egyptian vulture. Sightings of owls are frequent at dusk.
